Why Pronouns Matter—And How to Use Them Respectfully

Using the correct pronouns is a simple way to show respect for someone’s identity—and it can make a huge difference in how seen and safe they feel. Whether you’re new to gender-inclusive language or brushing up, here’s what you need to know.

What are pronouns, and why do they matter?

Pronouns (like she/her, he/him, they/them) refer to someone in place of their name. Using the right pronouns affirms a person’s gender and signals that you see and respect them.

Common sets of pronouns

  • She/her
  • He/him
  • They/them
  • Ze/hir and other neopronouns

Tips for getting it right

  • Don’t assume—ask politely (“What pronouns do you use?”)
  • Normalize sharing your own pronouns
  • Practice using unfamiliar pronouns
  • Gently correct mistakes (your own or others’)

What to do if you make a mistake

Say a quick “Sorry,” correct yourself, and move on. It’s okay to mess up—as long as you’re trying and learning.

How to foster a pronoun-respecting culture

Include pronouns in name tags and email signatures. Use inclusive language. Make space for people to introduce themselves authentically.
